Samuel Lamson Julian is the eldest child of Andrew Julian and Catherine Lamson. His family was poor and made an honest living by hard work and industry in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

SLJ has distinct recollections of news of significant events of the War of 1812. His father, Andrew, sailed his last voyage during this war. Events recalled were the looming British Fleet off New Hampshire's coast, particularly at Rye Beach, Perry's victory on Lake Erie, the Battle of Plattsburg, Hall's defeat at Detroit, Andrew Jackson's victory at New Orleans and finally the Declarations of Peace.

While he was young (approx. 9 years of age) 2 brothers died young. Shortly thereafter, his mother, Catherine Lamson, passed away in 1814. These deaths made a significant impression on young Samuel regarding the subject of death. On her deathbed, his mother impressed upon him to seek the Lord. It is something he never forgot and ultimately, he became a traveling preacher.

His father married Mary Muchmore who became his step-mother. At her urging, SLJ was sent off to work as a laborer at about age 12.

As a young adult man, he became acquainted with the Free Will Baptist Church and became a traveling minister for this congregation. His journeys took him through New Hampshire, Maine, Illinois and Michigan.

He met Nancy L. Hill, daughter of Joshua Hill, Limerick, Maine and was married by Elder S. Burbank on November 2, 1831. They initially set up their home in Shapleigh, Maine.

Samuel had a falling out with the Free Will Baptist Church around 1861. On page 44 of his unpublished autobiography (1875), Samuel says he was "cast out of the synagogue" on the grounds of his "teaching false doctrine such as the non-immortality of the soul and annihilation of the wicked...and other pernicious doctrine contrary to the views of ...the Free Will Baptists denomination".
