They crashed into a mountainside in the I Corps area of Vietnam, northwest of Nam Nghi in Quang Tri Province. Two others were KIA, the pilot and another passenger. Among his military awards and decorations were the Silver Star with OLC; Legion of Merit with OLC; Bronze Star Medal with Valor with 6 OLC: Meritorious Service Medal; Air Medal with 4 OLC; Army Commendation Medal with 2 OLC; Combat Infantry Badge; Parachutist Badge; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Army Presidential Unit Citation; Vietnam Gallantry Cross; Army Good Conduct Medal; and Purple Heart with OLC.
Interment on March 30, 1971.
