THE PHOTOGRAPHER

William Thomas James began making photographs in Hamilton County when he moved here in 1907. His first studio was in a tent.

James had moved from Mississippi to Comanche County, TX, in 1899. In 1903 he married the widow, Mrs. Callie C. Perry.

At birth James had been given only one given-name--William. When he was a little fellow he realized it was unusual for a boy to have but one name. He felt extremely hurt and neglected. He had a friend, Rev. Thomas, whom he adored and revered. One day the young boy William informed his parents that his name was going to be William Thomas and that from that day on they were to call him Thomas, which they did.

His last studio was the second floor of the Chesley building on the east side of Hamilton's courthouse square. W. T. James specialized in photographing children. James sold his business to T. A. Emmett on July 6, 1949.
