After living in Alabama and Tennessee The Woods moved to Texas in 1848 with his Daughter Mary Ann and her Husband Cornelius III McHaney and other family members and slaves.
John's grandfather Samuel Hockaday fought in the American Revolution and is said to have given his rifle to John who passed it on to his son, James Edwin Wood, who in turn gave it to his son, Ernest Eugene Wood, who was county clerk of Eastland Co. Texas after 1900.
John and his wife Agnes donated the land for the former Harmony Baptist Church and the current Pirtle Baptist Cemetery south of Kilgore Texas.
