William Dean Chadwick, Jr., was born in State College, MS. He attended the local Starkville High School and was valedictorian of the class of 1931. He then went to Mississippi State College, graduating in 1935 with a bachelors degree in mathematics.

He entered West Point in 1935. Being older than many of his classmates. Upon graduation in 1939, he chose Coast Artillery as his basic branch but applied for flight training. He was accepted but did not complete the course. On 9 Nov 1939, he reverted to his basic branch and was stationed at Ft. Crockett, TX, as a battery officer in the 69th Coast Artillery. Bill became ill and was transferred to the hospital at Ft. Sam Houston, TX. Due to his illness, he was retired from active duty for disability on 31 Mar 1941.

From 1942-4, Bill was an instructor in the mathematics department at Mississippi State University.
In 1945, Bill received a fellowship to study at the University of Alabama. He received a master's degree in mathematics in 1946 and then proceeded to teach there for a year.

On 15 Jun 1948, Bill suffered a heat stroke and died while fighting a brush fire at his mother's home in Mississippi.
