Wife of James Henry Foster. Daughter of Robert Addison Hemphill and Margaret Fee Henry.

Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, March 18, 1920

Mrs. Jas. H. Foster, a highly respected lady of this community, who has been suffering for the last five years from a cancer, passed away at her home Friday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock. While she has been in failing health for about five years she had been able to do her work until the last five months. All efforts put forth in her behalf were unable to stay the hand of death. Mrs. Foster was of a quiet, unassuming disposition, a good neighbor and loved and respected by all who knew her.

The following brief sketch was read at the funeral services which were held at the M. E. church Sunday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. R. W. Meeker, burial in the Fry Hill cemetery:

Alice M. Hemphill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Hemphill, was born at Bloomington, Indiana, May 12, 1858, and departed this life at her home in Lucas, Iowa, March 12, 1920, age 61 years and 10 months. She was united in marriage to James H. Foster at Chariton, December 24, 1879. To this union two children were born, Mrs. Maude M. Fuller, of Lucas, and Mr. James William Foster, of Douglas, Wyoming. James H. Foster, her husband, departed this life Nov. 18, 1888.

Mrs. Foster united with the Methodist church here more than thirty years ago, and lived a faithful Christian life until the end came. She was a faithful companion and a loving mother, always willing to sacrifice for others. She leaves to mourn her loss, two children, five grandchildren and two brothers, N. B. Hemphill, of Chariton, and W. H. Hemphill, of New Mexico.

In her long affliction she never grew impatient, but quietly awaited the summons that would call her home, and at 1:00 o'clock, Friday afternoon, the last whispered good-bye was spoken and the golden cord of life that bound the spirit to the suffering body was parted by the merciful hand of the Most High, and the spirit was given again into the blessed keeping of the one who gave it.

Through the columns of this paper we wish to thank our many friends who so nobly assisted us in the sickness and death of our dear mother.

James William Foster - Mrs. Manley Fuller
