Aaron Auten was the son of Paul Auten and Harriet McCann. Aaron married Elizabeth Jane Caswell (1831-1898). Children of Aaron and Elizabeth: George W. Auten (1847-1919), J. M. Auten (1849-1920), Norman Auten (1860-?), Aaron Auten (1861-1925), and Jane Auten (1865-?). Served in the Civil War and died near City Point, Hopewell, Virginia.

Aaron A. Auten, Private, Company B, Hall's Battalion of Michigan Sharpshooters. The U.S., Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865 records his cause of death as "killed by discharge of an old rifle, barrel placed in chimney of tent."
