Marshall was an avid sportsman, having been a handball champion while in the Army, he visited the Pentagon Officers' Athletic Center two or three times a week after he retired. He played Northern Virginia Senior Softball and enjoyed golf. He also enjoyed, and was enjoyed by, his grandchildren as he attended their sports activities.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marion O'Hara Talbott; two daughters, Patricia T. Reed (Tom) of Fairfax Station, Virginia and Stephanie T. Fleming (Drew) of Severna Park, Maryland; five grandchildren, Meghan, Ashley, Wrightly and Carrrington Reed and Hannah Fleming; a sister, Virginia Walkup (LG) of Rock Hill, South Carolina and a brother, William J. Talbott (Dorothy) of Lewisburg, West Virginia.
