Obituary -- J. D. Van Reenen
John David Van Reenen, oldest son of the four children of Cornelius [Marenus J.] and Betty Van Reenen, was born in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, October 22, 1853, and died at his home in Bedford, January 4, at the age of 91 years, 2 months and 13 days.

When but a boy the family came west, locating in Scott County, later coming to Bedford where they engaged in farming. Finally deciding to locate here permanently they bought land in Taylor County where the family was reared.

Here David met and married Elizabeth Hartley. He also bought land and established his own home here.

Two children were born to them, a son dying in infancy, and a daughter Etta L., now Mrs. Fred Pizza of Clarinda.

He and his wife fathered and mothered a nephew, Harry H. Hartley, taking him when a baby, caring for and educating him. He now resides in Creston.

David's earnest wish and desire had been that he could remain in his home until his last journey. This has been made possible by the untiring and loving attention given by the daughter and her husband.

For the past two years and nine months he had been cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Wid Holmes who have kept the home for him as they would for one of their own parents.

When a young man he united with the Methodist church and was a firm believer in that faith all of his days. He was a good Christian man, a thoughtful neighbor, and a faithful friend. A sister in Santa Ana, Calif., also survives.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Thursday forenoon, conducted by Rev. G. L. Hufstader. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.
