His first marriage was to Mary Jane Shaw (1835-1877) on Feb 21, 1854 in madison, KY. They had 10 children, 1 died at about 8 mos old. James next married Ida Prudence Waters (1860-1936) on Oct 14, 1880 in Pawnee, NE. They had 10 children, 2 died at birth or soon after. James and Ida divorced in 1900. James next married Gertrude S King. Gertrude was 30 yrs old and had a son from a previous marriage who lived with them. James was now 72, there were no children born to this marriage.
