OWNER OF DOUGLAS GROCERY, MARVIN J. BROOKS, DIES

Marvin J. Brooks, 69, owner of the Douglas Street Grocery at 3511 Douglas, died Sunday in a Dallas hospital. He had been ill of a heart ailment for five weeks.

The Rev. Frank Dent, pastor of the Oak Lawn Methodist Church, 3014 Oak Lawn, will conduct funeral services at the church at 3:30p.m. Tuesday. The body will be at the church one hour preceding the services. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ralph Hamm, Robert B. Cullum, Charles G. Cullum, George Nash, Douglas Nettleton, and Ralph Rodgers.

Brooks had been in the grocery business for himself or others here since 1908. The family home is at 4211 Gilbert.

Brooks was born in Hampshire, Tenn. One of his first connections here was with the old Bradford Grocery Company, of which he was manager. This was an early-day retail store located downtown.

Later, Brooks became a salesman for the Boren-Stewart Wholesale Grocery and the A. W. Cullum wholesale grocery firm. In 1933, Brooks bought the University Grocery near Southern Methodist University and sold it in 1948. He had owned the Douglas Street Grocery since 1949.

Brooks had been a member of the Oak Lawn Methodist Church since 1916. There he had been a member of the T. M. Cullum Bible Class and was a steward at the time of his death.

Brooks is survived by his wife; two sons, Marvin J. Brooks, Jr. of Miami, Florida and John Albert Brooks of Champaign, Illinois; a brother, Elbert K. Brooks, Terrell, and two sisters Mrs. W. A. Cullum and Mrs. F. L. Coe, both of Dallas.
