John was the son of Harvey William Hamilton and Mary Susan Kitchens Hamilton. He married Sarah Catherine Burton about 1860 in Walker County, Alabama. Children:

4. John Freeman m Emma Karrh
5. Mary Matilda m Charles A Travis
6. James Benjamin m Pauline Hillhouse

On February 18, 1862, Andrew John Hamilton enlisted in Company E, 28th Alabama Infantry at Walker County, Alabama, for three years or the duration of the war. The 28th Alabama fought under Gen Braxton Bragg as part of the Army of Tennessee for most of the war.

He was discharged October 3, 1862 due to illness.
