Delbert L. Mey, age 83, of Milwaukee, WI, formerly of Kiel, died Sunday, August 15, 2010 at Community Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls, WI.
He was born July 17, 1927 in Saginaw, Michigan, son of the late Walter and Edna (Awe) Mey.
Del attended Elementary and High School in Saginaw. He continued his education at Dr. Martin Luther College, graduating on June 9, 1950. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Concordia Teacher's College on March 4, 1960 and his Masters Degree from UW Oshkosh on December 23, 1971.
On June 11, 1950 Del married Valera J. Rosen at Perham, MN. Valera preceded him in death on January 31, 1994.
On September 2, 2006 he married Grace Zimdars in Milwaukee, WI.
He was a teacher in Perham, MN from 1947-1948. For 17 years, he taught in parochial schools in Bay City, MN and St. John's Lutheran School, Baraboo, WI.
Del and Valera moved to Kiel, WI where he taught in the public school system for 24 years as a music teacher and show choir director. During the summer months, he was employed with the DNR state parks.
He was a member of Risen Savior Lutheran Church, Milwaukee where he was tutoring 1st and 2nd grade students at Risen Savior Lutheran School.
Throughout his life, Del volunteered his talents at many places, taught piano lessons, was a member of OWLS, a church choir director, church organist and soloist, and the President of the Board of Luther Haven Association.
Del enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, walking and card playing.
Survivors are his wife, Grace of Milwaukee; three children, Craig (Julie) Mey of Eau Claire, Kevin (Janine) Mey of Kiel, Claudia Rolefson of Green Bay; seven grandchildren, Angela (Eric) Vandermause, Bradley Mey, Krista, Kali, Kelsey, Katelyn Rolefson, Sara Mey; and two great-grandchildren, Ava and Bria Vandermause. He is further survived by one brother, Lawrence (Donna) Mey; brother-in-law, Marven (Lou) Rosen; sister-in-law, Velma Pinks, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Mey and one brother, Walter (Mary Louise) Mey.
Funeral services for Del will be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, 9550 West Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee, WI with Pastor Kenneth Fisher officiating. Burial will take place in the Kiel City Cemetery. Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, 815 6th St, Kiel is assisting the family.
