Linus married Mary McPherson on Feb.7,1842 . He was 29 she was 21 years old. They were married 14 years when Linus passed away.
Prior to his accidental death Linus was a local townsman who co owned the firm Bage & Berthrong a produce company.Linus was accidentally shot while on a duck hunting excursion at the Seneca River in Cayuga County. In drawing his gun from under the seat the breech struck against a rib of the boat; he then seized the muzzle to draw it forward, but in doing so the hammer caught in a piece of carpet, it discharged and hit his right arm. He was a mile away from shore and his friend Mr. Hubbard rowed as fast as he could.Once on shore he had to walk a mile to a place where a team could be obtained to take him two to three miles further for medical aide.
A physician came and stated that the injured arm must be amputated.
Linus at once decided to return to Rochester, and have the operation there. He came up on the 4 o'clock train, and was taken to his residence. Several of the best surgeons were soon in attendance and after administering chloroform, the arm was amputated. Linus Berthrong passed away of his injury that morning at the age of 43 years old.
He was very much esteemed for his many social qualities and kindness of heart. He was a Veteran Gray, during the Mexican -American War having been in the early years of the corps and also a member of Adam's Band. He left behind a wife and 5 children.
