Jane Burt Smith was born in New York NY probably to John Burt who immigrated as a child from Scotland and Lydia Burt from Orange Co. NY. She was first married to a Mr. Vail who died very young, leaving Jane a widow at 21. In 1825 she married Gilbert Smith. They had two children, James Gilbert and Lydia Ann. As well as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, Jane should be remembered for her achievement and skill as an extraordinary quiltmaker who received recognition in her lifetime and whose masterpiece quilt is now in the collection of the Kansas City Museum. Her quilt is a fine example of New York antebellum quiltmaking at its best. Unfortunately she passed away at age 56, reportedly from cancer, only a few years after this quilt was completed. Her quilt and her family live on.
