Born Leroy Smeck,he came to be known as "The Wizard of the strings" for his playing abilities on ukulele,tenor banjo,guitar,and steel guitar-a true multi instrumentalist.
Roy invented and endorsed the Vita Uke and other stringed instruments made and promoted by the Harmony String Company,who made such brands as Airline,Regal,and Silvertone ukuleles. He recorded for Edison records,Victor Talking Machine Company,Columbia records,Crown records,Decca records,and RCA records. He made over 500 recordings during his lifetime.
He was inducted into the National Four String Banjo Hall of Fame in 2001,and is inducted into the Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum as well.
