Henry was the second of eight children of Jesse Lewis and Sarah Campbell. He married Frances Ellen Frye in 1856 and had one daughter. Henry's wife died in January, 1861 and Henry enlisted with the 145th PVI, Co B as a SGT seven months later. He saw action at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, then was wounded severely at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. Henry's left arm was shattered badly by a mini ball and amputated just below the shoulder. The wound did not heal properly and Henry came home to Edinboro, where Dr Henry R Terry treated him. The stump was too short to ever be fitted with an artificial arm. Henry Lewis was officially discharged on Dec 18, 1863. [Family researcher M Konruff]
