Alfred D. Gere, Student, of Northampton, Loses Life Canoeing on Day College Opens, Shooting Rapids, F.B. Riley Rescued
Hanover, N.H, Sept. 21 – Alfred D. Gere of Northampton, Mass., Dartmouth, ’07. Was drowned in the Connecticut river at Wilder, Vt., this afternoon, and Francis B. Riley, ’07, of Jamaica Plain, Mass., also a Dartmouth student, was rescued only through the efforts of three high school students who formed a living chain and pulled him from the water after he had sank the third time.
The men were in a canoe and attempted to shoot the rapids just above Wilder, a feat that is often accomplished but never without risk by anyone who is not an expert canoeist.
The frail craft was caught in an eddy and in the twinkling of an eye was capsized in plain view of nearly a score of persons on the shore. Young Gere was swept from sight at once, but Riley, who is an expert swimmer, made a desperate struggle for life.
Despite his ability to handle himself in the water, Riley could do nothing in the terrific currents of the rapids, and had it not been for the coolness and resourcefulness of Arthur White, Burton Murdock and Hugh Gee, three boys from Hartford High School, he would have met the same fate that overtook Gere.
Gere was 21 years old, prominent in society circles at Dartmouth, and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

Drowned Lad Was Son of an Editor
Northampton, Sept 21 – Alfred D. Gere, the Dartmouth student who was drowned in the Connecticut River today, was the only son of Edward C Gere of this city, editor of the Hampshire Daily Gazette. He was formerly a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, going from the institution to Dartmouth about two years ago.
(Boston Journal, Friday 22 September 1905, p1)

Body of Alfred Gere Found
President Tucker of Dartmouth college telephoned to Edward C. Gere yesterday afternoon that the body of Alfred Gere, who was drowned a week ago yesterday, had been found at West Lebanon, N.H. The action on the water had washed the body ashore, where it was discovered by workmen. The college authorities were at once notified, and the body taken to Hanover, whence it was shipped last night to Gere’s home in Northampton.
