Rev. John Pitass was born in Niemiecki Piekary, (Northern Selesia) which was in Germany at the time. He was educated there and after High School, studied in Rome, Italy, for the priesthood. In 1873, he arrived in Buffalo, New York, and was ordained on June 3 that same year. He immediately began the task of organizing a parish for the newly arrived Polish immigrants in Buffalo.
He was the founder of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, Church in Buffalo, building the church, a school and other facilities. He founded St. Stanislaus Cemetery, where his body was buried. He also founded the first Polish language newspaper in Buffalo, one of the oldest Polish papers in the East, and was publisher until his death.
His parish grew very quickly because of the large immigration of Polish people. Within ten years of its foundation, there were over 1,000 families. He was a very popular and well liked priest and the church was filled for his funeral, both with lay people and priests. It was estimated that over 20,000 people passed by his casket.
His two nephews, Rev. Peter Pitass and
Rev. Alexander Pitass were also priests of the Diocese of Buffalo.
