Samuel McCLUER bought a farm on the main road between Franklinville and Ellicottville and there built and kept one of the four tavern that operated for many years on that road. It was known as "The Travellers Rest."

He also built the first frame barn that was erected along that same road.

He was a Major in the 173rd Infantry Regiment of the State Militia, commissioned July 12, 1821, having been commissioned Lieutenant August 1, 1818, and Captain August 24, 1819.

Following the death of Samuel McCLUER, his wife married Peter PHILLIPS, who came from Kinderhook, Columbia County, NY to Franklinville. He continued to run the tavern, and the story is told that he kept a peck measure of counterfeit coins under the bar for his stepsons and sons to pass out to customers too far "gone" to know the difference.

To date, 1971, no record of the marriage can be found.
