OBITUARY OF KATHRYN ALLEN

Long-time Perryton resident and civic leader Kathryn ALLEN, 92, died January 18, 1994.

Memorial Services will be held at 2 :00 p.m. on Friday, January 21, in First United Methodist Church with Rev. Tommy Brower of Houston, and Rev. Don McDonald, pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be that morning in Ochiltree Cemetery, under the direction of Boxwell Brothers.

She was born September 01, 1901 in Coleman, and grew up in Albany.

She attended CIA (now Texas Womans University) and North Texas State University, and came to Perryton in 1921 to teach. She married Jack R. ALLEN in Albany on June 14, 1923. Her husband, a State District Judge, and the first from Ochiltree County to hold that position, died in 1957.

During the Depression, she served as the American Legion Auxiliary's Child Welfare Chairman; and later was active in the PTA and the Red Cross.

A charter member of the Perryton, Sorosis Club, which founded Perryton's library, Mrs. ALLEN was also a charter member of the library board, twice serving as its president. She was a life member of the board.

During World War II, she became the society reporter for the Herald, as the current editor had joined the WACS. She and two other women became the official events recorders for a year.

As a Sorosis Federated Women's Club member, she was very active in the TFWC organization. She served as the first president of the newly-formed Top of Texas District of Texas Federation of Women's Clubs from 1960-62, and later held state offices in the organization.

Mrs. ALLEN was also elected one of 28 women in the state as a life member of the state TFWC executive board.

In Perryton, she served on the first board of directors of the YMCA, and called a meeting in her home to organize the County Historical Survey Committee. The committee produced the first county history book, "Wheatheart of the Plains," which she helped compile.

An elder in the Trinity Presbyterian Church, she attended many Presbytery and Synod meetings as a delegate, and held offices in the Presbyterial. Mrs. ALLEN also served for three years on the National Presbyterian Panel, an advisory committee.

A former County Democratic Chairman, she attended several state conventions as a delegate, and in 1960 was an alternate delegate to the National Convention which nominated John F. Kennedy. She also attended his inauguration and its many social functions.

She served on the planning committee of the Panhandle Heritage Foundation for the production of the show, "Texas" in Palo Duro Canyon, and was a charter member of the foundation's board of directors, serving for many years. She also served on the advisory committee of West Texas State University.

She was honored in 1971 as a recipient of the Perryton-Ochiltree Chamber of Commerce's Pioneer Achievement Award.

She was preceded in death by a son, Bill, who died in a plane crash in 1969.

She is survived by one son, Jack M. ALLEN of Perryton; one daughter, Mary Kathryn ELLENWOOD of Fort Worth; nine grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Trinity Presbyterian Church or one's favorite charity.
