John Beam was born in Robeson Township, PA in 1798. His father was Jacob Boehm (1762-1802). There is no record of his mother. John had an older brother, Jacob (born 1796) and a younger sister, Catherine (born between 1799 and 1802). The children were orphaned at an early age, when their father died in 1802. John and his brother left Robeson Township (around 1818) and went to Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey. John married Elizabeth Cross, March 5, 1822. Their children were: William Cass Beam born 1822, Samuel Cross Beam born 1824, John Cross Beam I born 1827, Augustus Beam born 1830, Alford Beam born 1832, and Elizabeth A Beam born 1835.

From the Illinois State Journal, July 26, 1866: "Died on the 25th at half past four o'clock P.M., John Beam, aged 68 years. The friends and acquaintances of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral at his residence today at four o'clock P.M."
