The son of Henry & Elizabeth Smith, he married Adeline Black and fathered Arabella C. (b. 12/22/55 - married Luther H. Damon), Elizabeth J. (b. @1857), Florence (b. @1859), Roberton (b. 01/??/70), and Boyd S. (b. 12/??/73).

In 1860, he was a farmer living in Juniata Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 11" tall with dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Perry County September 10, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 26 as a private with Co. I, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa). On October 3, 1863, he transferred out of the 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry and assigned as ward master of Harrisburg's Camp Curtin Hospital and remained in that roll until honorably discharged May 30, 1865.

After the war, he moved to Illinois before settling in Nebraska per contributor Dennis Brandt.
