Lorenzo Brakeman was born in Trunoull County, Ohio, September 8, 1824 to Lewis S. and Elizabeth (Coon) Brakeman. The family moved to Pennsylvania when Lorenzo was but a boy, and here he received a limited education while working on a farm with his father. Lorenzo married Sarah Thompson on March 11, 1846. He was a soldier in the Civil War serving with the 169th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, Co. H. After the war he returned to Pennsylvania, where he remained until the spring of 1870 when he came to Nebraska in a wagon with his wife and nine children. They arrived in York County on September 4, 1870 and only four months later his wife died. He married Mary A. (Cross) Kenison on April 29, 1875.
