Davenport—Services for John S. Derderian, 73 of Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Friday at McGinnis, Chambers & Saas Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal, with military services conducted.
Visitation is 5-8 PM today at the funeral home.
Mr. Derderian died Tuesday, March 17, 1998 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.
He was born May 23, 1924 in Davenport to Sam and Marguerite (Dernernisian) Derderian. He married Nancy Sloat in 1967 in Rock Falls, IL.
He graduated from Davenport High School in 1942, where he lettered in track and participated in wrestling.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with 3rd Army, 2nd Cavalry in the European Theater. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, he received the American Campaign Medal. European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal with three Bronze Battle Stars and the World War II Victory Medal.
He graduated from the State University of Iowa in 1952 with a degree in mechanical engineering.
He served as a construction engineer for Aluminum Company of America on its Davenport Works expansion from 1955 to 1957. He had been both a laborer and a draftsman on the construction of the original Davenport Works.
As a mechanical engineer with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, from 1958 to 1963, he worked on the Red Rock and the Saylorville Dams, as well as on several area pumping plants. He also worked for a short time with Beling Engineering, Peoria, IL. He was a resident engineer on the construction of Black Hawk College in East Moline.
He was employed for Turner Construction Co. as a mechanical superintendent on the construction of the 57-floor IDS Center in Minneapolis, and held a similar position, also for Turner, on the construction of the Northern Trust Building in Chicago.
He worked as a mechanical engineer with AARMCOM at the Rock Island Arsenal from 1974 until his retirement in 1985.
He was a lifetime member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Davenport American Legion Post 26, 2nd Calvary Association and National Rifle Association.
His interests included reading, photography and walking.
Memorials may be made to Visiting Nurses Association.
Survivors include his wife, sons Joseph, James and Jeremy; a sister Mary, and a brother George.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, and his parents, Sam in 1979 and Marguerite in 1994.
