LARRY G. WEATHERBIE

Larry Gene Weatherbie, age 50, Wichita, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. He was born Oct. 9, 1953, in Sedan, the son of Bill L. Weatherbie and Margaret L. Smith Weatherbie.

He graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1972. He attended Fort Scott Community College. He played football for Pittsburg State University and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from PSU.

He married Michelle Knotts June 22, 1980, at First Baptist Church in Fort Scott.

He began his teaching career at Edna as a teacher and assistant principal. He taught and coached in Labette County and Holton before accepting a job at Fort Scott Middle School, where he worked from 1981 to 1986. He was the middle school assistant principal at both Joplin North and South schools in Joplin, Mo. He moved to Haysville Middle School in 1990 and to Paola Middle School in 1995, where he was principal. He was principal at Wellington Middle School until illness forced his retirement in December. He was a member of the Derby Praise Assembly of God.

Survivors include his wife, Michelle, of the home; a daughter, Lindsay Weatherbie, Wichita; his mother, Margaret Weatherbie, Fort Scott; a brother, Charlie Weatherbie, Monroe, La.; and a sister, Pat Lutz, Ponca City, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his father.

The Revs. Duane McCracken and Rick Crossette will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Fort Scott. Crossette will conduct a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Yates Cemetery in Yates Center. Visitation is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main St., Fort Scott. Memorial contributions are recommended to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and may be sent to the funeral home, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, Kan. 66701.
