Hugh Charles Derby born December 17, 1902, Frontenac, Kansa, and is the 6th child of John Peter Derby and Euphemia Monahan Derby. He attended Frontenac High School and worked in the coal mines before his family moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1920. Hugh worked for Kentucky Natural Gas before he went into the Navy in WWII. In 1944, he was discharged from the Navy in San Pedro, CA. He got a job at Union Oil. In the spring of 1945, he went back to Kentucky and moved the family to California. At Union Oil he was a member of the Oil Workers International Union, C.I.O. He worked for Union Oil until he retired. He was a member of the American Legion Long Beach Post #560 since 1948, and a proud member of The Knights of Columbus since 1950. He was proud of his country and of his service to his country. He carried with him his Selective Service registration card, Navy ID, and US Naval Reserve card until the day he died. - Written by his granddaughter Kristine Cerone
