George was a ship merchant in Liverpool and one of the most enterprising business men of the town. In 1854 he was the owner of the brigantine TRIUMPH, 231 tons, the brigantine RICHARD COBDEN, 131 tons, brigantine INDEPENDENT, 118 tons, brigantine BOSTON, 118 tons and the schooner VILLAGE, 65 tons. He and Mr. John Edgar, formerly of Glasgow, formed a company to introduce gas light to Liverpool and did considerable preparation but did not complete the project. Long's Annals state that from 1848 the shipping business was in prosperous condition carrying cargoes to the West Indies and other foreign ports. There were twenty-five wharves and docks in Liverpool Harbor and more than 50 sea captains in the West Indies trade, besides captains of the coasters. He was Town Clerk of Liverpool in 1857. On 24 Aug 1860 the family sailed from Liverpool to Boston in the brigantine CHEROKEE on the way to Wisconsin. A great depression had occurred in Liverpool at this time, two banks in Liverpool went bankrupt and their supporting merchants and lumbermen were faced with hugh debts they could not cover.
