"Barney"

Age 95, died Friday, August 20, 2010. Barney was born in Farmington, DE in 1915 and was raised in Wilmington, DE.

He attended Wilmington High School and was later employed with Wilmington Police Department. A U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, Barney was in the Big Red 1 Division, landed on Omaha Beach, and served during the Battle of the Bulge. Barney returned to the Wilmington Police Department after his discharge. He attended Southern Police Institute at University of Louisville, and he was the class speaker at graduation. He retired as Captain in 1959. He served in U.S. Marshall's Office then he became the Clerk of the U.S. District Court in Wilmington, until his retirement in 1979.

Barney married Letitia Linus in 1939. She died in 2003.

He enjoyed boating, travel, ballroom dancing, shooting, woodworking, and Friday night happy hours. Barney was a member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, Athenaeum Society, New Castle Rod and Gun Club, and University & Whist Club.

He lived at Shipley Manor since 2008.

The family wishes to thank the staffs of Shipley Manor, Compassionate Care Hospice, and 5 West at Wilmington Hospital for their care of our father.

Barney is survived by his son, Michael L. Barney, and his wife, Susan Jo Barney, of Meredith, NH; his daughter, Tish Barney Gallagher, and her husband, Fred Gallagher, of New Castle; his grandchildren, Michele Barney Hutchins (Clint) of Bridgewater, NH, Michael S. Barney (Ryan) of Bridgewater, NH, and Patrick J. Gallagher of New Castle, DE; his great granddaughters, Emily Michele Hutchins and Ryleana Ernestine Barney, both of Bridgewater, NH; his brother-in-law, Aloysius Linus of New Castle; and nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service at Krienen Funeral Home, 34 West 6th St., New Castle on Thursday morning, August 26 at 11 am. Friends may call at Krienen Funeral Home from 9:30-11 am. Interment in St. Peter's Church Cemetery, New Castle.
