Princess Catherine Ivanovna of Russia was the second child of Prince Ivan Konstantinovich of Russia and Princess Helen of Serbia. She was a great-great-granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and a niece of King Alexander I of Yugoslavia. She was the last member of the Imperial Family to be born before the fall of the dynasty.

She emigrated from Russia in 1918 and lived in several European countries. She resided in Italey from 1937 to 1945, where her maternal great-aunt, Queen Elena, was the Queen Consort, the wife of Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italey. During her stay there, she was married on September 15, 1937 in Rome to the Italian diplomat Ruggero Farace, Marchese Farace di Villaforesta. On occasion of her wedding she renounced to her succession rights to the Russian throne. Her husband was the Italian ambassador to Uruguay and it is there that they settled.
