Julia left Norway 10 April 1871, celebrating her 18th birthday on board the ship "Norway", before landing in Quebec. From Quebec she travelled by train and boat to Zumbrota, Minnesota. She married Ole Bakke in 1873 in Goodhue County. Together they had 14 children. Ole died 16 March 1910.

Julia was a member of the Little Norway Lutheran Church. She spoke mostly Norwegian and answered questions through her children, most of whom also spoke Norwegian.

She died at her home in Garden Township. She was nearly 101 years old.
