William Herbert Bowerman was born November 14, 1890, in Bonham, Texas (Fannin County), the second of five children born to Peter Lee Bowerman and Melvina C. Bess. Herbert's siblings were Norah Etter Bowerman (1888-1899); Mary Costa Bowerman (1897-1971); Dewey Rance Bowerman (1899-1961); and Lattie Elizabeth Bowerman (1902-1969).
