Death of Charles W. Dowell, 83, Civil war veteran, he was a Private in Company D, 185th Regiment, O.V.I., and one of the youngest survivors of the war in this vicinity, occurred Sunday evening, June 15, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Leota Curtis, following a year's illness from paralysis.
The deceased, a son of Richard and Margaret Dowell, was born near Summerfield and lived the greater part of his life here. He was also a resident of East Union for several years.
Surviving him are the following children, Mrs. Addie Bowen, Rix Mills; Fran Dowell, Pleasant City; Samuel Dowell, Akron; Mrs. Grace Spaid and Mrs. Lillian Curtis, Canton; Mrs. Allie Archer, Caldwell; Mrs. Madge Davis and Mrs. Curtis, this place. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Samuel, Dresden and Emmett Dowell, Zanesville; one sister, Mrs. John Swanson, Massillon, and a number of nephews and nieces to whom he was more familiarly known as "Uncle Bub". His wife preceded him in death a number of years ago.
The deceased was a member of M. E. Church and was affiliated with John Brown post, No. 504, G. A. R., and the Daughters of Union Veterans.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at M. E. Church by Rev. J. D. Kaho, pastor, after which the body will be taken to the East Union cemetery for burial.
