U.S. Senator. Moving to Washington in 1887, he was successful in logging business and served as president of the Employers’ Association of Washington, (1916-17). During the World War I, he was appointed a Major in the U.S. Army, assigned to the spruce-production division at Grays and Willapa Harbors, (1918-19). In 1932, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Wesley L. Jones, serving until 1933. After leaving the Senate, he resumed his logging business interests and was president of the Grammer Investment Company until death at age 68.
