Delilah Blevins was born on Jan. 4, 1828 in Wayne Co., Kentucky. She was the daughter of Pleasant Blevins (abt 1806-bet 1880/1900) and Elizabeth Abbott (1810-abt 1872 ?). Delilah (as spelled on her headstone) is NOT thought to have been part Native American (Cherokee) as shown in some family trees.

Delilah's father, Pleasant, was born in 1806 in Wayne Co., Kentucky. The county had been created just a few years earlier (1800) from Pulaski and Cumberland Counties.

The year and place of Pleasant's death is uncertain. The 1880 US Census shows that at the age of 76 he was living in Buncombe, Pulaski Co., KY so Pleasant probably died between 1880-1900. There is a Buncombe Baptist Church and cemetery located just south of Eubank, Pulaski Co., KY. Buried on family farm? Buried in Buncombe Cemetery with no marker? Burial site currently unknown.

Delilah's paternal grandparents were Jonathon Blevins (1779-1963) and Catherine "Katy" Troxell (1783-1814). Her paternal great-grandparents were Revolutionary War soldier Johnathon Blevins (1763-1830) and Charlotte "Lottie" Muse (1769-1808).

Little is known about Delilah's mother, Sarah. The 1850 US Census says she was born about 1810 in Kentucky. She appears in the 1870 census but may have died not long afterward as in November of 1872 husband, Pleasant, married Jane Davenport (1843-1898) in Scott Co., TN. Sarah's parents are unknown.

On Oct. 8, 1842 Delilah Blevins married Mathew King (1824-1901). He was 18 years of age, Delilah just 14. Mathew was the son of Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880) and Mary Rebecca "Polly" Cox (1800-1881), the seventh of their fifteen known children. The pictures of Mathew posted on Ancestry.com, as well as those that purport to be his wife, Delilah Blevins, are unfortunately incorrect.

Delilah and Matthew were married for 53 years and had 15 known children. They were Mary "Polly" King (1845-1895), Jasper King (1846-1926), Newton King (1847-aft 1900), Elizabeth "Betty" King (1849-1889), Thomas King (1850-bef 1860), Malinda "Linda" King 1853- ?), Burl "Big Burl" King (1854-1923), Pleasant W. King (1856-1910), Thomas Murray King (1857-1907), Rachel King (1860-1919), Mathew King Jr. (1861-1913), Joseph or Joab W. "Joe" King (1861-1924), Shadrack "Shad" King (1867-aft 1920), Olive "Ollie" Frances King (1868-1941) and Luvernia King (1870- ?).

Delilah died on Mar. 12, 1895 in Pine Knot, Whitley Co. (now McCreary Co.) at the age of 67. She is buried in the Mathew King Cemetery which is located in McCreary Co. very near the KY/TN state line. Apparently, this land was once a part of their farm as Delilah is the first recorded burial and was called the Matthew King Cemetery.

Delilah's husband, Matthew, died in Pine Knot at the age of 77 in 1901. At the time he was living with his great-granddaughter, Luvernia (30) and her son , Frank C. King (1). Mathew is also buried in the King Cemetery, next to his wife, Delilah. With his original marker almost completely deteriorated a new marker was placed at his burial site a few years ago. Delilah's original headstone has held up well and has not been replaced.
