John Alvin Goddard, 84, of Beckley passed away Thursday, August 19, 2010.

Born August 11, 1926, in Pineville, WV, he is the son of the late John "Roy" Goddard (1902-1976) and Myrtle Dale Hill-Goddard (1905-1985).

John served with the U.S. Navy in WWII, in the SeaBees, as a Seaman 1st Class. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing.

John was a member of the UMWA and a member of the Calloway Heights Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and sang in the church choir.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian "Joyce" Cook-Goddard (1927-1999) whom he married on April 3, 1948 in Kopperston, Wyoming County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Wyoming County, WV, 1948, Page 189, Application Date: March 29, 1948), and sisters, Louise R. Goddard-Fisher (1922-Deceased) and Lucille Mamie Goddard-Cook (1922-2009).

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Violet Goddard of Beckley; son, John David Goddard and wife Debra Goddard of Bridgeport, WV; stepdaughter, Judith L. Presley of Goose Creek, SC; grandsons, Dr. John A. "Chip" Goddard of Parkersburg and David E. Goddard of Bridgeport, WV; step-granddaughters, Melissa McGuire and husband Sean McGuire of Aurora, CO, and Carla Peavy and husband Andy Peavy of Hanahan, SC; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, James "Jim" Calvin Goddard (1929-2017) and wife Mary Francis Davis-Goddard of Beckley (B. 1929); and sister, Virginia "Catherine" Goddard-Stewart (1932-2017) and husband Carl Morris Stewart (1930-2012) of Pineville.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 23, 2010, at Calloway Heights Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Parker, Pastor Doc Adkins and Pastor Jeff Canterbury officiating. The church will be open one hour prior to the service.

Burial will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, W.Va.
