Confederate Navel Office - Miles J Freeman was Chief Engineer of the Confederate Raider CSS Alabama, captured after the engagement with the USS Kearsarge, off Cherbourg, France, he was held at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor until the end of the war. He also served on the CSS Sumter as first assistant engineer earlier in the civil war.

Born in Wales, educated in Scotland, he resided in New Orleans, Louisiana during the outbreak of the Civil War. After the war he married and lived in Elizabeth, NJ, Jersey City and later was a patient at Greystone Asylum.
