Edith Mae Rayburn Maddox, 89, of Ashland, Ky., died Saturday, August 21, 2010, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, Ky.

She was born July 8, 1921, in Carter County, Ky., to the late Warren George and Verna Conley Rayburn.

Her husband, Denver E. "Gene" Maddox of Ashland survives.

She taught parliamentary law and was a co-owner of the Carriage House Inc. She was a former member of the Toastmistress Club, loved flowers and was a member of the Woodland Garden Club, pinned by the state president as a 50-year member of the Ashland Women's Club. She was a former first vice president of the Parent-Teacher Association of Kentucky. Edith was a former board member of the Hack Estep Boys Home, loved and played the game of golf, was an avid bridge player, lived in Germany and England for several years and traveled extensively while in Europe. She was a member of the Continental Dance Club and Centenary United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school for both youth and adult with 55 years of service and was a member of the Women's Missionary Division. She was circle chairman of the older group of women of Circle 3 and worked with the Scouts and was a den mother. She did volunteer work with the Red Cross, King's Daughters Medical Center and the VA Hospital in Huntington. She also worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Fritz Washington Rayburn.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Dr. Daniel E. Maddox and wife Colleen of Rochester, Minn.; a brother, Warren Bryson Rayburn of Ashland; a sister, Nada Jane Rayburn of Ashland; and three grandchildren, Johnathan Rayburn Maddox of Minneapolis, Minn., James Denver Maddox of Bakersfield Calif., and Sarah Elizabeth Maddox of St. Cloud, Minn.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Farley Stuart III and the Rev. Troy Poff. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
