He married Minerva Eve Patterson, the daughter of Lemuel J. Patterson, on 15 April 1866 in Greene County, Illinois. They had five children: Minnie F., Norman Lemuel, Lucy M., Howard, and Cora M.
In 1866, he entered into a partnership with L. J. Patterson and James Howard in a general merchandise business called Jones, Patterson & Co. In 1871 the business dissolved by mutual consent. He was appointed County Superintendent of Schools and served two years as Deputy Sheriff under N.J. Andrews and two years under F. M. Bridges. In 1876 he became the Democratic candidate for sheriff and was elected by the largest majority ever polled for that position.
He served as county clerk 1882-1890; editor Roodhouse eye-Herald for several years; and Roodhouse supervisor. He was the father of Illinois Supreme Court Justice Norman Lemuel Jones.
