Mary Elizabeth (Brown / Rock) Patterson was the daughter of Charlotte Maria (Bourne) Rock. Her stepfather was Charles David Rock. Charlotte and Charles married a year and a half after Mary's birth. Mary's biological father was named David Brently, according to her birth certificate.

Mary first married Joseph Falconer Campbell on 7 Aug 1895 in Ontario, Canada. Their wedding was officiated by Reverend C. Burdett, and witnessed by William Finn and Mary Lounsburg, both of Ridgetown. Mary and Joseph Campbell had one son, Leroy Campbell, in 1893 in Ridgetown, St. Thomas, Ontario.

On 20 March 1909, Mary wedded William Charles "Charlie" King, in the home of her mother and step-father. One week later, the local newspaper reported that Mrs. W.C. King, nee Brown, the stepdaughter of Charles Rock, was still the legal wife of Joseph Campbell and had committed Bigamy. In that same year, William and Mary King decided to move to the United States. They settled in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa.

Within the next two years, Mary and William divorced. Newly single, Mary visited her parents in Ontario in 1911. Leroy, however, remained in the states and may have spent some time in California before returning to Des Moines.

Mary returned to the states and married James Patterson on 18 May 1912 in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa. Leroy married and moved in next door with his family. The families remained close and Mary lived to see most of her beautiful grandchildren.
