Founder of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (the Fenians) after the failure of the rising of 1848. Went to America in 1858 and promised a rising in 1865 which never materialised. Escaping from arrest, he was denounced by his American former allies as 'a rogue, impostor and traitor'. Eventually returned to Ireland where his last years were spent in realitve tranquility.
