OBIT- 29 May 1941 PIERCE COUNTY CALL, Pierce, Pierce Co Carl Julius Winter was born on 31 August 1872 and confirmed 18 April 1886 at St Paul's Lutheran Church, Norfolk, Nebraska. He lived at the family homestead until 4 December 1898 when he married Emma Koehn of Hadar, Pierce Co, Nebraska. She was born 20 December 1878. They were married by Rev Albert Kluge, the witnesses were August Koehn and Mrs Herman (Anna) Splittberger. Carl and Emma farmed two miles west of Hadar until 1913 when they purchased a farm four miles south-west of Pierce, which was their home until February 1931 when they moved to the city of Pierce due to the poor health of Emma, who passed away 28 September 1931. Julius took up farming again after the death of his wife, but was forced to retire after the loss of the farm to the 1930 Dust Bowl and accumulating debts and failing health. His son Herbert purchased the farm. Julius died 25 May 1941 at 9:30 in the evening following a coma. He had suffered from a heart ailment. Julius was a prominent citizen of Pierce County for many years and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Julius and Emma were the parents of eight children: Herbert, Erhardt, Edgar, Rudolph, August, Arnold, Albert and Doris.
