U.S. Military Figure in Civil War. He played a role in raising troops for the Union in 1861. He was commissioned Captain and Assistant Adjutant General U.S. Volunteers by the President Lincoln, confirmed by the Senate, but failed to receive a commission. He served with the 11th Brigade, Army of the Ohio, during the campaign and battle of Shiloh. After being ordered to Washington, Boyle was commissioned again before resigning to accept a commission as Lieutenant-Colonel 9th Kentucky Cavalry. He was mustered out at expiration of his term of service on September 11, 1863. Boyle participated in the battles of Perryville, Horseshoe Bend and other actions. He was then appointed Adjutant General of the State of Kentucky before resigning in 1864 to become a lawyer. In 1868 was elected State's Attorney for the 27th Judicial Circuit.
