Lawyer and financier. An 1875 graduate of Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, Breckinridge taught school during the 1875-76 school year at the Anderson Seminary in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. He moved to St. Louis in 1878, upon which he entered the St. Louis Law School and the Summer Law School at the University of Virginia. He then joined the prominent law firm of Lee & Adams until he was called upon to undertake the reorganization of the Decatur Land Improvement & Furnace Company of Decatur, Alabama, then the largest corporation in Northern Alabama. In 1896, he brought about the organization of a National Association of Trust Companies and became known as "The Father of the Trust Company Section." He became the President of the Missouri Banker's Association the following year. When he returned to St. Louis, he became one of the founders of the Mississippi Valley Trust Company and was made Secretary, then counsel, then the second vice president, then the first vice president and finally the president during his more than 37 years with the company. Jones was a strong supporter of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair and was one of a committee of 15 who organized the fair.
