Fritz Baumhoefer was the son of German immigrants Henry Baumhoefer and Lydia Joste. He grew up in the town of Washington, in Franklin County, where his father worked as a planer in a sawmill. Fritz had a brother Henry and a sister Josephina.

Fritz married his wife Emma Oeffel, of Warren County, in 1893. By 1900 they were farming in Cedar Township, Boone County. By 1910, they had five children: Lucile, Ella, Otto, Edna, and Josephine.

Fritz died of a gunshot wound inflicted by his brother, who had married and settled on a farm nearby. The death was ruled a homicide, and Henry was sentenced to 35 years in the Missouri State Penitentiary.

According to accounts of the trial in Hartsburg and St. Charles newspapers, Henry murdered Fritz on Henry's farm, after the brothers quarreled about financial matters in Hartsburg.
