U.S. Congressman. He attended the St. Louis University, the University of Mississippi and graduated from the University of Virginia. During the Civil War, he served as a Major in the Confederate Army. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Farmington, Missouri. In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1889. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was general solicitor attorney for the Missouri Pacific and St. Louis & Iron Mountain Railway companies, until his death at age 70.
