Mexican Campaign Medal of Honor Recipient. Served as a Lieutenant Commander in the UnitedStates Navy during the 1914 Vera Cruz, Mexico Campaign. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery onApril 22, 1914. His citation reads “For distinguished conduct in battle, engagement of Vera Cruz, 22 April1914; was regimental adjutant, and eminent and conspicuous in his conduct. He exhibited courage and skill inleading his men through the action of the 22nd and in the final occupation of the city”. His Medal was issued onDecember 4, 1915. Lieutenant Commander Johnston was also awarded the Navy Cross during his service. Acareer Naval officer, he graduated from the USNA in 1895, rose to the rank of Rear-Admiral, and fought in thePhilippine Insurrection, the Boxer Rebellion and World War I.
