Marjorie Adolphson

Adolphson, Marjorie 80 02/18/1930 08/01/2010 Marjorie "Marge" Adolphson died Aug. 1, 2010, in Portland. She was born Feb. 18, 1930, in St. Helens to Elmer and Hilda Dahlgren. After graduation from Oregon State College, Marge moved to Salem where she met the love of her life, Tom Adolphson, while starting her teaching career. They married in 1952. Marge taught at South Salem High School and North Salem High School, where she was the head of the art department. She loved the students and other teachers. She worked on her own projects outside of school and was active in the Salem arts community. Family activities kept her busy too; while raising their children, Becky and Kent, she was the Camp Fire Girls leader and planned many wonderful family vacations. When the kids were grown, Marge and Tom moved to Lincoln City. In 1983 they started a shop, Parlor Bears, which led to many new friendships and travels abroad. They sold the store in 1995. Tom died in 2003. After an accident in 2007, Marge moved to an assisted living apartment in Portland. Marge was never idle. She was a determined perfectionist mastering everything she was interested in: jewelry, printmaking, watercolors, photography, stained glass, and gardening. Every Christmas she loved making beautiful cookies. She was an excellent seamstress. Marge was a unique and special person. Intrinsically modest, she possessed an underlying intensity and energy that enabled her to accomplish and succeed at many things. She was thoughtful, always engaging, and always up for any challenge life had to throw her way. She touched all our lives in special ways, opening our eyes to many of life's wonders. We will miss her. Marge is survived by her daughter, Becky Garvey of Portland; son, Kent Adolphson of Salem; sister, Lucile Lyons of Portland; brother, Charles Dahlgren of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; and grandsons, Kevin, Max, and Kody. A celebration of Marge's life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, in Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service, 605 Commercial St. S.E., Salem. Charitable contributions may be made to Oregon Humane Society or your favorite arts organization.
