He came to America about 1833 with his wife Mary Gourlay Thom (b. 23 Feb 1807, Edinburgh) and son George Thom. He and Mary were married on 28 April 1828 in Canongate Parish Church, Edinburgh, Scotland. He worked as a cabinetmaker.
His death on 14 July 1864 was due to consumption. Mary, who died in 1901, is supposed to have been buried with him, but there is no stone for her. He was buried in Green-Wood on 17 July 1864.
The family name is sometimes misspelled as THORN.
