Dr. J. C. Amig Dies, Middleburg Native
Dr. John C. Amig, Middleburg native, former Lewistown postmaster, and long a leader in the Democratic party, died in Lewistown Hospital at 3:25 a. m. Wednesday after an illness of several years.
Dr. Amig served as postmaster of Lewistown from December 31, 1933 until his retirement due to disability April 30, 1943. March 3, 1939, he had become the first postmaster in Pennsylvania and the fifth in the United States to be appointed under the Civil Service law.
He was born December 7, 1868, and chose the dental profession as his life-work, graduating in 1894 from Philadelphia Dental College. He began practice in Middleburg, but moved to Lewistown in 1896, continuing practice there until he became postmaster.
He was a veteran of World War 1, having served as lieutenant in the dental corps. He was the son of Philip and Harriet (Shambach) Amig.
He was a delegate to the National Democratic Conventions of 1904, 1908, and 1932.
He married Anetta May Marks in 1895. She survives, with one son, John, Lewistown, three grandsons, a brother, Milton Amig, Freeburg, and a sister, Mrs. Bert (Lilian) Van Horn, Middleburg.
